Calculate absenteeism costs

What can reducing absenteeism yield for your organization?

What does absenteeism cost your organization, and what are the benefits if it decreases? With this calculator, you can make this tangible — using your own figures, rather than report averages. You enter four data points: the number of FTEs, the wage costs per day of absence, your current absenteeism rate, and the realistic rate you aim to achieve.

What does lower absenteeism deliver?

Enter your own figures. You see straight away how the outcome is built up, assumptions included, so that you can check the sum internally.

Full-time equivalents, not headcount
Gross salary plus employer contributions
As your HR records measure it
Where you realistically want to be
Assumptions
A full-time year minus weekends, public holidays and leave

The sum is exact: FTE x working days x the difference in absence x the cost per day. What you actually achieve depends on the percentage you enter above, and that is where the assumption sits, not in the sum.

Difference —
Fewer days of absence per year —
Indicative direct impact —
Indicative value of lower absenteeism per year —

This is the outcome of your own figures; the sum follows directly from what you entered. Whether you reach that expected percentage depends on context, scope and follow-through. This is not a direct cash saving but an indication of the financial value of the days of absence recovered in this scenario.

Why are there two amounts?

The first amount calculates with the wage costs of the recovered absence days. The actual burden is higher: wages typically account for 40 to 50 percent of the total costs of absenteeism. Replacement staff, overtime, productivity loss, and managerial time come on top of that.

Both amounts represent a scenario based on your input, not a forecast. What you can do with it: start the conversation with your management team or financial officer about what is at stake.
